British Broadens Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Advisory Roster with 11 Nations

The UK authorities has added eleven further countries to its official warning roster about the threats of toxic alcohol toxicity from contaminated spirits.

This updated warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "an international surge in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol poisoning.

Only a few weeks ago, the government had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, after multiple high-profile incidents like the tragic demise of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that as little as minimal doses of methanol can result in vision loss or loss of life within 12–48 hours.

Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Used?

Toxic alcohol is a harmful industrial alcohol commonly used in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. This substance is not meant for drinking.

While it is inherently formed during the production of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the refining procedure.

Yet in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to cut costs, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is impossible to identify.

Authorities' Recommendations for Travelers

Government representative Hamish Falconer said that all travellers should know the signs of industrial alcohol toxicity.

"While consuming alcohol overseas, opt for reputable establishments and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," the official said.

"If something appears suspicious, such as a headache that's much more severe than normal or sight issues – seek medical attention right away."

The full roster of destinations identified as carrying a threat of toxic alcohol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
