Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson revealed he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when a pair of track officials crossed the track right in his path

The alarming incident occurred on the third lap when track officials were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to replace his compromised front wing

Moments later, the team's competitor Lawson spoke to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you just see that? I might have... taken their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"

"I exited on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and there were just two dudes running across the track"

"I came close to striking one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"

"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown somewhere but I've never encountered that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

Formula 1's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances

"Following a turn one incident, track officials was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the apex of that corner" commented the regulatory authority

"In the third rotation, safety personnel were alerted and placed on standby to access the circuit and recover the debris once all cars had passed"

"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy personnel were withdrawn and a safety warning flag was displayed in that area"

"We are still investigating what transpired subsequent to that time"
