Significant Internet Disruption Impacts Numerous Sites and Apps

A large-scale online failure has affected dozens websites and applications worldwide, as users reporting issues connecting to the web due to difficulties at the online infrastructure platform.

The affected apps comprise Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, in addition to a host of Amazon-managed operations like its primary shopping platform and the Ring doorbell device manufacturer.

Throughout Britain, Lloyds bank was affected in addition to its branches Halifax and the Scottish bank, and further notifications of difficulties using the HM Revenue and Customs online portal on Monday morning. Also in the UK, several Ring users turned to social media to report their security devices were malfunctioning.

In the UK alone, notifications of disruptions on individual applications ran into the many thousands for each app.

Officials confirmed that the issue started in the Atlantic coast of the United States at the cloud division, a division that offers vital internet backbone for a host of businesses, who lease space on the company's servers. AWS is the most extensive online services system.

Shortly after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (8 in the morning BST), officials reported “higher error rates and delays” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the east coast of the US. The cascading impact appeared to hit services globally, and the problem monitoring service indicating issues with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a service that tracks online failures, further indicated a rise in outages on the start of the week, and numerous instances found in the state of Virginia, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where the company stated the issues began.
