The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after losing a vote of confidence that came after his disputed social media posts about the conservative activist.

The vote against George Abaraonye achieved the required super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the organization.

Disputed Comments

The controversy began after the student reportedly shared messages on online platforms that appeared to celebrate the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while addressing a university in the United States.

According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The president-elect is also said to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students seeming to express approval of the event.

Election Results

The no-confidence motion was conducted over the weekend, with results revealed on Tuesday.

Official notices indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.

The notice stated that the president-elect was deemed to have resigned in accordance with the society's regulations.

Procedural Disputes

Proceedings were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.

In a statement, the student asserted that the vote tally had been halted because election administrators believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".

His statement categorically refuted that any person acting for the student had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Ongoing Dispute

The student maintained that extremely serious issues had been referred to the governing body and that he remained president-elect.

His comment added that he was "proud and thankful to have the support of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who supported a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Opponents have said that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the society has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Responses

On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an open letter to the Oxford Union on a related program broadcast.

The letter accused the society of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union openly applaud the assassination of a ideological rival".

The statement indicated that if the student were to keep his position, supporters would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name".

The society had earlier criticized the student's remarks after Kirk's death and confirmed that concerns submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The student leader had been one of several students to debate with the activist at the society in May.
